Coach Gary Newsome - Founder/Owner and Head Coach for Girls and Boys- Coach Newsome is a graduate of Shawnee Mission West High School where he was a three year varsity starter and letter winner in basketball and track earning all state honors his junior and senior years. Gary turned down opportunities to play college basketball, football and track to pursue his ministerial calling and to tend to his newly acquired family. He has attended Johnson County Community College and DeVry Institute but is currently pursuing a Bachelor degree in Sports Ministry at Faith Bible College. After previously dropping basketball from his life, in October of 1996 Coach Newsome began to have an itch to get back to the game he loves.  He began to coach various AAU and competitive basketball teams within the KC Metro. In August of 2006, Coach Newsome was hired as the Varsity Girl’s Head Coach at Olathe Christian School while also serving as Assistant Athletic Director. Under Coach Newsome's leadership, the Olathe Christian Lady Warriors amassed an overall three year record of 91-14 (.867) while collecting two NACA National Championships (’08, ’07), one MAAC Midwest Regional Championship (’07) and three KCAA Kansas State Championships (’09, ’08, ’07).  At Olathe Christian Coach Newsome developed and produced two NACA All-Americans (Leah Cotton-University of Minnesota and Amy Green-Washburn University) while graduating and placing every one of his players in various colleges.

 
In April 2004, Gary founded and is the Executive Director of Warrior Academy Sports, with Warrior Hoops being the basketball arm of his company.  He oversees the day to day operations of Warrior Hoops basketball program and coaches several teams.  He has developed and produced a number (30+ and counting) of college bound players from the Kansas City Metro.

 

Coach Newsome is married to the beautiful Portia Newsome.  They have been married for 24 years and have been blessed with three sons: Donte-24, Dexter-22 and Devin-18 (Former Shawnee Mission South Undefeated State Champion but now has taken his talents to the University of Nebraska Omaha on a full ride basketball scholarship).

 

Portia Newsome - Co-Owner and Executive Administrative Assistant- Portia Newsome works alongside her husband, Coach Gary Newsome, to help fulfill the vision of Warrior Hoops of reaching youth by any means necessary. She handles the administrative duties of the company so that Coach Newsome can do what he loves to do and that is coach, develop and equip kids in the game of basketball and life.  Portia Newsome is a member of WEA (Womens Entrepreneurers of America). She also works in ministry at her local church as well as running her own ministry "The Prayer Room, Inc" to establish prayer back into the hearts of God's people.  She is a bright up and coming author featuring her debut book, "Prayers from the Prayer Room, Volume 1" soon to be released to the public.

 

Donte Newsome - Director of Player Development, Boys Head Coach and Skills Development Lead Trainer- Coach Donte Newsome is a Kansas native who played varsity basketball his entire high school career.  Coach Donte finished his senior year winning the 3A State Championship at Olathe Christian, and earning 1st Team All Conference and 1st Team All Tournament Team at the 3A State Tournament in 2007-08 .  Coach Donte went on to play in college at Oklahoma Wesleyan University where he won the NAIA DII National Championship in 2008-09.  He also played at Manhattan Christian College where he won the NCCAA Regional Tournament in 2009-2010. Coach Donte Newsome, aka Coach Tay, has been coaching for 8 years in the Warrior Hoops program, and coaches all age groups and levels. In addition, Coach Tay has established himself as one of the Premier Basketball Skills Trainers in the Kansas City Metro.  Basketball is more than just a game to Coach Tay, but rather a passion, and a vehicle to impact peoples' lives in a positive manner. 

 

Dexter Newsome - Boys Head Coach and Skills Development Lead Trainer- Coach Dexter Newsome is a Kansas native that has played basketball since he was a young boy. He played in the AAU circuit and went on to play at the Varsity level in High School.  In Coach Dexters' junior year in High School he played along side his brother, Coach Donte Newsome, to win a 3A State Championship at Olathe Christian.  In his senior year, he lead Gardner-Edgerton High School to make an appeareance in the 5A State Tournament, finishing 3rd place.  Coach Dexter had to forgo college basketball opportunities due to some major injuries.  Coach Dexter didn't waste the knowledge and experiences gained as a player but rather uses that as his fuel as a coach.  Coach Dexter has a special gift to reach youngs kids with his lively personality. He wants to make a difference and impact the lives of children in his sphere of influence.

 

Marcus Newsome - Boys Head Coach and Skills Development Trainer- Coach Mark is the 7th grade head coach for Warrior Hoops. He's a 37 year old man of God and shares a wonderful life with his wife of 10 years, Nikki Newsome, and two amazing children, Kierra (5) and Kash (2). Coach Mark has lived in Johnson County most of his life.  Coach Mark attended and graduated from Shawnee Mission West High school in 1994 with a full ride scholarship to play football at Pittsburg State University.  Coach Mark started coaching basketball in 2006-2007 when he joined his brother, Coach Gary Newsome at Warrior Hoops. Coach Mark spent the next couple of years learning the game of basketball as an assistant under the direction of Coach Gary Newsome. This time of study allowed him to learn how to build relationships with kids and how he can be a positive influence in their lives.  Coach Mark has coached all levels of basketball from high school to the most resent 6th-7th.  In the Fall of 2013, Coach Mark lead his 5th grade team to a USSSA State Championship in Div. 2. Coaching and training young athletes is Coach Mark's passion and what he does full time.  He's an intense, hard-nosed coach that will challenge your kids to get the best out of them.  He will also love on them and encourage them with the same intensity.  As a coach, he understands the impact he can have on a kid's life so it's not just about X's and O's with him but rather teaching life lessons that will help them in all phases of their lives and letting his Faith in God shine through.        

 

Maurice King-Clark - Boys Head Coach and Skills Development Trainer- Coach Maurice King-Clark, aka Coach K, grew up in Kansas City, MO and played AAU ball for the KC Heat and KC Magic. After moving to Texas to finish High School, he attended Cisco Jr. College on a basketball and football scholarship. From there he walked on at Texas Tech University and also went to play at North Western Oklahoma State University. He has always loved the game of basketball as well as passing on valuable knowledge so coaching comes natural to him. He also believes in giving back and teaching valuable tools such as mental toughness, discipline, and the power of positive thinking which can also be applied in and off the court.
 

Leah Cotton - Girls Head Coach and Skills Development Lead Trainer - Coach Leah is a 2009 graduate of Olathe Christian School. She had her #32 jersey retired as the most decorated player in Olathe Christian school history.  Coach Leah led her team to a 98-14 record in her high school career . Coach Leah played her AAU ball for the NE Lady Prospects of Kansas coached by Phillipe McCree and Warrior Hoops coached by Gary Newsome. Coach Leah attended the University of Minnesota from 2009-2013.  She played 4 years of collegiate basketball.  Coach Leah graduated from the University of Minnesota in May 2013 with a Major in Family Social Science and Minor in Youth Studies.
